Shipping an excavator from China to Ghana is not a standard parcel decision. A mini excavator or larger machine moves as project cargo, and the total cost depends on dimensions, weight, seller terms, lashing, and clearance at Tema. The first step is not to collect a rate; it is to confirm exactly what you are buying and who is responsible for each stage of the movement.
Start with machine data before shipping an excavator from China to Ghana
Ask the supplier for the machine serial plate, operating weight, transport weight, length, width, height, and any loose attachments. A compact mini excavator may fit inside a container, while a full-size crawler excavator moves differently. Weight and dimensions drive the mode choice and lashing plan, not a guess.
- Make and model
- Serial number and engine serial
- Operating weight and transport weight
- Dimensions with boom lowered and with any attachment removed
- Manufacturer year and country of origin
- Photo and video of the machine running, hydraulic functions, tracks, pins and hoses
If the seller will not provide the serial plate photo or a live video, pause. You need to confirm the machine matches the invoice before you send any money.
Verify the seller and the machine before payment
Most excavator imports begin with a Chinese manufacturer, an Alibaba store, or a trading company. Treat the first contact as an audit, not a purchase. Ask for clear inspection photos, a video of the machine operating, the serial plate, a proforma invoice, and a packing list. Compare the serial plate against the manufacturer name and model.
If you buy through an online marketplace, use the platform's payment and dispute rules as your control point. Do not move payment outside the platform without written evidence that the supplier exists at the stated location. Read our step-by-step import guide for the document flow from a Chinese seller to a Ghana port.
Incoterms and a written quote that says who pays
The International Chamber of Commerce defines Incoterms 2020. EXW, FOB and CIF are the three terms most often shown by Chinese machinery sellers. Under EXW, you own the risk at the seller's gate and you arrange everything from there. Under FOB, the seller clears export and loads the machine onto the vessel; you pay ocean freight and destination charges. Under CIF, the seller pays export and ocean freight and typically buys insurance, but Ghana clearance, duties and delivery are still yours.
Do not treat CIF as a landed cost. Even CIF does not include Ghana customs clearance, Ghana Revenue Authority duties and taxes, inspection fees, storage, or delivery from Tema. Your quote should say who pays lashing, port charges, and any terminal handling at Tema. As the importer, confirm every Ghana Revenue Authority duty and tax before buying.
Shipping an excavator from China to Ghana means choosing the right mode
Mini excavators often fit a 20 ft or 40 ft container when the boom is lowered and the bucket or blade is removed. Larger tracked excavators usually cannot fit a standard container and move on a flat rack or open top container, or by roll-on roll-off, depending on the dimensions and weight. Very heavy or oversized equipment may require breakbulk.
Guldstreet Shipping arranges RoRo, flat rack, open top or breakbulk as the cargo requires. We quote each excavator or heavy equipment shipment per job because the numbers change with the machine, port pair and current carrier charges. See our China to Ghana shipping service page and our heavy equipment shipping guide for the mode options.
Do not apply the China vehicle rates shown for fuel and hybrid cars and SUVs to an excavator. Those published vehicle rates are for cars and SUVs only. Machinery is quoted separately. If you are comparing a used machine from the United States, see how to ship an excavator from the USA to Ghana.
Lashing, securing and pre-shipment inspection
The ocean carrier will require the machine to be clean, free of soil, drained of excess fuel and secured to the flat rack, open top or RoRo deck. Lashing points must match the machine's tie-down points, and the tracks or wheels must be chocked and restrained. Ask the carrier or the loading supervisor for a written lashing plan before loading.
If you can, send an independent inspector to the supplier's yard before payment. If you cannot, ask for a live video walkaround with the serial plate and a dated checklist. The inspector or loader should photograph the machine from all sides and record any existing damage. For rotating machinery and generators, also review our generator and industrial machinery guide.
Ghana clearance and documentation
Ghana Revenue Authority controls customs valuation, duties and taxes at Tema. Confirm the current duty and tax treatment for construction machinery with Ghana Revenue Authority before you commit to the purchase, because classification depends on the exact machine type, engine type and use.
For any used self-propelled machine that Ghana classifies as a vehicle, confirm with the Ghana Standards Authority whether the GS 4510 pre-shipment inspection and Certificate of Conformity apply. The Ghana Standards Authority suspended the inspection on Oct 5, 2026, and a new date has not been announced. Reports on a used-vehicle age limit conflict, so confirm the age rule with Ghana Standards Authority before buying.
Prepare the seller's invoice, packing list, bill of lading, export declaration, and any manufacturer's declaration. Missing paperwork at Tema will delay clearance and can add storage charges. Ask the seller for all export documentation before you pay the balance.
Frequently asked questions
Will a mini excavator fit in a container?
Some mini excavators fit a 20 ft or 40 ft container when the boom is lowered and the bucket or blade is removed. The answer depends on the machine's transport dimensions, not the model name alone. Submit photos and the serial plate dimensions for a written quote.
How much does it cost to ship an excavator from China to Ghana?
Heavy equipment is quoted per job. The final price depends on the machine dimensions, weight, Incoterm, port charges, lashing, insurance and Ghana clearance. A written quote should separate each of these items. Do not treat an online vehicle rate as a machinery rate.
Should I buy FOB or CIF?
FOB gives you more control over the ocean carrier and destination charges. CIF gives the seller more control but does not include Ghana clearance or delivery. Whichever term you choose, the quote must state who pays export clearance, lashing, ocean freight, insurance, terminal handling and destination delivery.
Who checks the machine before it leaves China?
You can hire an independent inspector, use the supplier's pre-shipment inspection, or ask the loader and carrier to record the condition during loading. At minimum, require live video and serial plate photos before payment, and have the machine photographed at the port before sailing.
