How business cargo moves from the USA to Ghana

Business goods from the United States reach Ghana in one of two ways: by air into Kotoka International Airport, or by ocean into Tema. Air suits small, high value or urgent consignments. Ocean suits pallets, cartons, machinery and anything sold by the container, and it is the usual choice for businesses shipping stock, fixtures, building materials and equipment.

Within ocean freight there are two structures. Full container load, or FCL, means your cargo occupies the whole container and you control the packing. Less than container load, or LCL, means your pallets share a container with other shippers and you pay for the space you use. Guldstreet Shipping handles both, along with air buying runs through our Business Desk, and every business shipment is quoted per shipment in writing rather than from a published rate card.

Air or sea: choosing the mode for your goods

Air freight is priced on chargeable weight, which is the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Light bulky goods therefore pay heavily by air. Sea freight is priced on volume and container space, so the same cartons usually cost less per unit by ocean once you can wait for a sailing.

Ask three questions before you choose. How quickly does the stock need to be on a shelf in Accra? What is the value per kilogram? Can the goods survive weeks in a marine environment with proper packing? If the answer to the first is urgent and the value per kilogram is high, air is sensible. If the goods are heavy, bulky or sold at modest margins, ocean is the practical route.

We do not publish transit times, sailing times or clearance times in days or weeks. The vessel and the estimated arrival are confirmed when your cargo sails, and that confirmation is what you should plan around.

Full container load: when FCL makes sense

FCL is the right structure when your volume fills a container, or when the goods are fragile, high value or need to stay sealed from origin to destination. You control how the container is packed, which matters for furniture, shop fittings, machinery and anything that must not be handled repeatedly.

Heavy equipment and machinery can move by RoRo, flat rack, open top or breakbulk as the cargo requires. Not every piece of equipment fits a standard box, and the loading method is decided per job after we see dimensions, weight and lifting points.

For dedicated full containers through our Business Desk, containers sail on the next weekly departure. That is a schedule for our own buying and consolidation service, not a promise about vessel transit.

Shared container load: LCL for pallets and part loads

LCL lets a business ship a few pallets without paying for a whole container. Your cargo is consolidated with other shippers at origin, devanned at destination and released against your documents. It suits first orders, sample stock, seasonal top-ups and businesses testing a new product line in Ghana.

The trade-off is handling. LCL cargo is loaded and unloaded more than once, so packing has to be built for it. Palletize and shrink wrap, label every carton with your company name and the consignee details, and keep a packing list that matches what is inside. Shared containers through the Business Desk go on our consolidation schedule, confirmed at booking.

What business shipping to Ghana costs

Business shipments are quoted per shipment in writing. There is no published business freight rate, because the price depends on volume, weight, mode, loading method and destination. USA and Canada vehicle, equipment and container shipments are quoted per job in writing.

Two things to keep separate in your budget. First, the freight and handling we quote. Second, Ghana duties, taxes and port charges, which are assessed on arrival and are not part of a car quote. Our car quotes exclude inland transport and every service before the car reaches our warehouse, any GS 4510 inspection once it is reinstated, and Ghana duties and port charges. Plan for the duty and port side of the budget separately, and confirm the current assessment with a licensed customs house agent.

Documents your Ghana shipment needs

Paperwork is where business shipments lose time. The commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading have to agree with each other, line by line, description by description. A mismatch between the invoice and the packing list is a routine reason for cargo to sit while questions are answered.

Two Ghana rules to build into your planning now. First, Ghana Shippers' Authority registration is required before ICUMS processing, under Act 1122, enforced from August 2026. Register early rather than at the port. Second, the PUBD is filed on arrival or within 48 hours.

On the vehicle side, the Ghana vehicle import standard GS 4510 pre-shipment inspection and Certificate of Conformity were due from October 1, 2026, but the Ghana Standards Authority suspended the inspection on October 5, 2026, with no new date announced. Do not assume the inspection is currently required, and do not assume it will stay suspended. For any other regulatory question, confirm with the agency or a licensed customs house agent before you commit to a purchase order.

If you are exporting vehicles from the United States, U.S. CBP needs vehicle title documents at least 72 hours before export.

Rules that affect what you can ship

Some categories are closed or restricted, and it is cheaper to learn this before you buy stock than after. Flood, fire, rebuilt and salvage vehicles are barred from Ghana. Right-hand-drive vehicles are admitted only under a regulated conversion framework that is still being set up. Reports on the used-vehicle age limit conflict, with figures of 10 and 15 years in circulation, so confirm the age limit before buying any used vehicle for Ghana.

Used fridges, freezers and air conditioners are banned. Ghana's 2026 VAT reform set a single effective VAT rate of 20 percent including NHIL and GETFund, which affects your landed cost calculation.

Guldstreet does not handle gold, silver, diamonds or precious stones, crude oil, LNG or refined petroleum, or live animals. If your product sits near any of those categories, ask before you book.

Packing and palletizing for ocean freight

Ocean freight is unforgiving. Moisture, stacking pressure and repeated handling do more damage than distance. Build cartons for the journey, not for the warehouse shelf.

  • Use double wall cartons for anything above 30 pounds, and palletize loads that will be handled by forklift.
  • Shrink wrap pallets and band them, with corner boards so the wrap does not cut the cartons.
  • Label every carton and every pallet with your company name, the consignee in Ghana and the carton count.
  • Keep a packing list that matches the physical load, carton by carton.
  • Photograph the finished pallets before they leave your premises.
  • Add desiccant where humidity is a risk, and avoid paper packaging for goods that absorb moisture.

Our free printable packing guide at guldstreetshipping.com/packing-guide/ is written for barrels and boxes, and the same principles apply to business cartons. Packing supplies are available if you need them, from moving boxes and dish packs to a TV box up to 70 inches, and a Ghana-Ready Packing Service is quoted from 449 dollars after photos or an item list. Every packing job has a written limit, and supplies are not refundable once delivered.

Business Desk: buying, consolidating and shipping

Many businesses in Ghana buy from several American suppliers at once. Our Business Desk, which Ghanaians often call bulk buying, purchases in bulk for customers from Amazon, Walmart, Target, wholesale clubs, distributors, Alibaba and 1688, within each seller's purchase limits. We photo-check every item, consolidate and pack, then ship to Ghana.

Orders we buy for the customer ship by air every week. Dedicated full containers sail on the next weekly departure, and shared containers go on our consolidation schedule, confirmed at booking. Customers can also have their own suppliers deliver to our warehouse, but only after the full quote is paid.

One quote covers the whole job and is paid in full upfront. Every order gets an itemized invoice, a packing list for Ghana customs and a monthly statement. That paperwork trail is the part most businesses underrate until their first customs question arrives.

Payment, booking and what to expect

There is no deposit. The invoice is paid in full before pickup. We accept PayPal, including card, with the card price 3 percent higher than the non-card price, and Cash App. Cash to the driver is accepted for barrel and box balances at pickup only, not for vehicles, heavy equipment, containers or commercial cargo. Card payments are welcome for those. We do not accept Zelle, bank transfer or wire.

For business cargo, expect a written quote that states what is included and what is not, a packing list for Ghana customs, and confirmation of the vessel and estimated arrival when your cargo sails. If a supplier is delivering to our warehouse, that happens only after the full quote is paid.

Checklist before your cargo leaves

  1. Confirm the goods are permitted in Ghana and not in a barred category.
  2. Complete Ghana Shippers' Authority registration ahead of ICUMS processing.
  3. Check that the commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading agree.
  4. Decide air, LCL or FCL based on urgency, value per kilogram and volume.
  5. For vehicles, confirm the age limit and have title documents ready at least 72 hours before export for U.S. CBP.
  6. Palletize, wrap, label and photograph the load.
  7. Budget Ghana duties, VAT at the single effective rate of 20 percent including NHIL and GETFund, and port charges separately from freight.
  8. Keep the itemized invoice and packing list where your customs house agent can reach them.
  9. Confirm the vessel and estimated arrival once the cargo sails.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I ship business goods from the USA to Ghana?

Guldstreet quotes business shipments per shipment in writing.

Is it cheaper to ship to Ghana by air or by sea?

Confirm anything else with the agency or a licensed customs house agent.
