Two proven ways to ship to Ghana

Barrel shipping: fixed price, door to door
Barrel shipping is designed for personal effects and regular remittances. A 55-gallon barrel to Ghana costs $190. That price includes door pickup in New York City, New Jersey and Philadelphia, ocean freight to Tema, customs clearance at Tema, Ghana import duties on personal effects, and door delivery in Accra and Tema. Delivery to other Ghana cities such as Kumasi or Takoradi is quoted separately before booking.
There is no minimum volume. One barrel is fine. The price is fixed and predictable, which makes it easy to plan. Barrels are ideal for clothing, food, household goods and similar items. The main limitation is size: contents must fit within the drum, so furniture, appliances and large items are not suitable.

Container shipping: for full households and vehicles
Container shipping gives you exclusive use of a container. It can carry furniture, appliances, vehicles and large items that will not fit in a barrel. Both full container (FCL) and shared container (LCL) shipments are available. For USA and Canada vehicle, equipment and container shipments, costs are quoted per job because the scope varies.
Container shipping has a higher minimum cost than barrel shipping. You pay for the whole container whether it is full or not. Ghana customs for full containers is more complex and expensive than for personal effects in barrels. This option makes sense for full relocations, warehouse-scale volumes, or when you are shipping a vehicle or heavy equipment.
When container shipping is the right fit
- You are moving an entire household, including furniture and appliances.
- You are shipping a car, SUV, pickup truck or commercial truck.
- You are shipping heavy equipment or machinery. Depending on the cargo, this may move by RoRo, flat rack, open top or breakbulk.
- You have enough volume that exclusive container use is more practical than many barrels.
Current focus: vehicles, equipment and containers to Ghana
Through January 2027, Guldstreet Shipping is focused on shipping cars, heavy equipment and containers to Ghana from the USA, Canada and China. USA and Canada vehicle, equipment and container shipments are quoted per job. This reflects the range of cargo, ports and delivery requirements involved.
Ghana import rules to plan for
Ghana vehicle import standard GS 4510 was due to take effect on October 1, 2026, but its pre-shipment inspection was suspended on October 5, 2026, with a new date to be announced. When enforced, it requires a pre-shipment inspection and a Certificate of Conformity. If you are shipping a vehicle to Ghana, build this step into your planning before the shipment moves.
