A Guldstreet Shipping Research Report
By the Guldstreet Research Team, Guldstreet Shipping
Accurate as of October 30, 2026. Rules, taxes and fees change. Confirm the details with the relevant agency or a licensed customs house agent before you ship.
What door delivery from Tema or Kotoka actually involves
Door delivery means your cargo is collected from the port, the airport cargo terminal or a consolidator warehouse, cleared where required, and brought to a named address. It is a separate job from ocean freight. A shipment can arrive at Tema correctly and still sit there for days because nobody arranged collection, clearance or a truck to the final address. The practical answer to the main question is this: confirm who holds the documents, who will clear the cargo, and who will collect and deliver it before the vessel sails. If those three roles are not written down, the cargo is not really door to door.
Guldstreet Shipping handles last mile delivery in Ghana: collection from Tema, Takoradi, Kotoka cargo terminal or consolidator warehouses, with door delivery anywhere in Ghana, including cargo shipped by other companies. Each delivery is quoted per delivery, so the price reflects the actual address and cargo, not a generic zone.
The four handover points your cargo passes through
Most delays happen at a handover, not at sea. Knowing the sequence helps you ask the right question at each stage.
- Carrier or airline release. The shipping line or airline releases the cargo to the party named in the documents. The bill of lading, airway bill or equivalent must match the consignee details exactly.
- Customs and port formalities. Clearance at Tema or release at Kotoka cargo terminal happens before the cargo can leave. Ghana Shippers' Authority registration is required before ICUMS processing under Act 1122, enforced from August 2026. For anything beyond that, confirm the current steps with the agency or a licensed customs house agent.
- Physical collection. A truck, a forklift or both are needed depending on the cargo. A barrel can be lifted by hand; a car, a flat rack or a container cannot.
- Door delivery. The final address in Accra, Tema, Kumasi, Takoradi or elsewhere. Access matters: gate width, road condition, whether a truck can turn, and whether anyone will be there to receive the goods.
Documents to settle before the vessel sails
Documents are the part most often left to the last week. For U.S. exports, U.S. CBP needs vehicle title documents at least 72 hours before export. That is a fixed requirement, not a suggestion. For barrels and boxes, the bill of lading or airway bill consignee name and contact number should be checked against the receiver's ID before sailing. A misspelled name can turn a simple collection into a correction request.
If you are shipping from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington DC or Virginia, the same rule applies: settle the paperwork while the cargo is still in the warehouse, not after it reaches Tema. The vessel and estimated arrival are confirmed when cargo sails, so use that confirmation to brief the receiver in Ghana.
Ghana import rules that affect delivery
Several Ghana rules change what can be delivered and what must be checked before you buy. State them plainly to whoever is receiving the cargo.
- GS 4510 inspection. The used-vehicle pre-shipment inspection and Certificate of Conformity were due from October 1, 2026, but the Ghana Standards Authority suspended the inspection on October 5, 2026, with no new date announced. Do not treat the inspection as currently required; confirm the position before you ship a vehicle.
- Vehicle age limit. Reports on the used-vehicle age limit conflict, 10 years versus 15 years. Confirm the age limit before buying a vehicle for Ghana.
- Barred vehicles. Flood, fire, rebuilt and salvage vehicles are barred.
- Right-hand drive. Right-hand-drive vehicles are admitted only under a regulated conversion framework that is still being set up.
- VAT. Ghana's 2026 VAT reform set a single effective VAT rate of 20 percent including NHIL and GETFund.
- Banned goods. Used fridges, freezers and air conditioners are banned.
- PUBD. The PUBD is filed on arrival or within 48 hours.
For any other regulatory question, confirm with the relevant agency or a licensed customs house agent. Rules change, and a written confirmation is worth more than a rumor at the port.
Collecting from Kotoka cargo terminal
Air cargo arrives at Kotoka cargo terminal and is released to the consignee or an agent after the airline and customs steps are complete. The receiver should have the airway bill number, the consignee name exactly as it appears on the document, a valid ID and a phone number that answers. If someone else collects on the receiver's behalf, the authorization should be in writing and arranged before the collection day.
Kotoka is not a warehouse. Cargo that is not collected can start to attract storage charges, and the terminal is not responsible for arranging your truck. If the final address is outside Accra, plan the collection and the onward delivery as one job so the goods are not loaded twice.
Collecting from Tema port
Tema is the larger and slower handover. The shipping line releases the container or cargo, terminal handling is billed by the line, and clearance and duties are separate. If you shipped a full container, the free time matters: Guldstreet container quotes include 8 free days in the U.S. and 21 at Tema. Detention and demurrage beyond those free days are not included, so the collection date should be set as soon as the vessel and estimated arrival are confirmed.
For a shared container or a barrel shipment, the consolidator warehouse is often the collection point rather than the quay itself. Confirm the warehouse address and opening hours in writing, and send the driver's name and vehicle details ahead of time if the warehouse requires it.
Delivery to Accra, Tema, Kumasi and other cities
Door delivery in Accra and Tema is included in Guldstreet barrel and box shipments to Ghana, and in Shop and Ship orders. Delivery to other Ghana cities, including Kumasi and Takoradi, is quoted separately before booking. That difference is not a penalty; it reflects the actual trucking distance and the return trip.
For cargo shipped by another company, or for cargo collected from Tema, Takoradi, Kotoka or a consolidator warehouse, last mile delivery is quoted per delivery. Send the address, a contact number, photos of the access road if it is unusual, and the cargo dimensions. A quote based on a real address is more useful than a guess based on a city name.
What last mile delivery costs and what it does not
Last mile delivery is quoted per delivery. It is not a flat national rate, and it is not included in a quote for a vehicle, piece of equipment or container unless the written quote says so. The table below separates what is normally included from what is normally separate, so you can compare quotes fairly.
| Item | Normally included | Normally separate |
|---|---|---|
| Barrel or box to Accra or Tema | Door pickup from Boston to Washington DC, ocean freight to Tema, customs clearance at Tema, Ghana import duties on personal effects, door delivery in Accra and Tema | Delivery to Kumasi, Takoradi and other cities; last mile delivery of cargo shipped by another company |
| Vehicle, equipment or container | Only what the written quote lists | Inland transport and every service before the car reaches our warehouse; Ghana duties and port charges; Tema terminal handling billed by the line; clearance; stripping; inspections; storage; detention and demurrage beyond free days; insurance |
| Shop and Ship order | Item cost, buying fee and shipping in one written quote; door delivery in Accra and Tema | Delivery to other cities, quoted |
| Last mile only | Collection and door delivery as quoted | Any clearance, duty or port charge owed on the cargo |
For USA and Canada vehicles, equipment and containers, quotes are per job in writing. Car quotes exclude inland transport and every service before the car reaches our warehouse, any GS 4510 inspection once it is reinstated, and Ghana duties and port charges. Read the exclusions before you compare two quotes, because a lower headline number often excludes more.
A practical checklist before you pay for delivery
Use this list for every shipment, whether it is a single barrel or a container of machinery.
- Confirm the consignee name and phone number match the bill of lading or airway bill exactly.
- Confirm who holds the original or telex release and who will clear the cargo.
- Confirm the collection point: Tema, Takoradi, Kotoka cargo terminal or a named consolidator warehouse.
- Confirm the free days and the last free day for containers, and book the collection before it passes.
- Send the full delivery address, a landmark, a contact number and photos of the access if a truck may struggle.
- Confirm who pays any duty, terminal handling, storage or demurrage, and get it in writing.
- For vehicles, confirm the age limit, check the vehicle is not flood, fire, rebuilt or salvage, and confirm the right-hand-drive position.
- For barrels and boxes, send a photo of each barrel or box with a tape measure or its capacity stamp when you book, because every barrel and box is measured at pickup and a larger one is charged at its real size before loading.
- Keep the packing list for Ghana customs with the receiver's copy.
- Agree what happens if nobody is at the address on the delivery day.
Mistakes that turn a simple delivery into a storage bill
The most common mistake is treating arrival as the finish line. A second is assuming the receiver can collect without documents. A third is sending a truck to an address that cannot take it. A fourth is leaving a container past its free days. A fifth is paying a deposit to an unverified agent who cannot show a written scope. Guldstreet does not ask for a deposit: the invoice is paid in full before pickup, online by card or PayPal, or by Cash App or cash to the driver before loading for barrel and box shipments. No cash is accepted for vehicles, heavy equipment, containers or commercial cargo; card payments are welcome for those.
If you are shipping from the New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington DC or Virginia area, the same discipline applies at the front end. Book the pickup, confirm the measurement, and brief the receiver in Ghana in the same week. The vessel and estimated arrival are confirmed when cargo sails, and that is the moment to lock the delivery plan.
How Guldstreet handles the Ghana end
