Shipping to Ghana from Washington DC: the short answer
Guldstreet Shipping now picks up across Washington DC. We collect barrels, boxes, totes, suitcases and bags of rice from your door, ship them by ocean to Tema, clear them through Ghana customs and deliver them to Accra and Tema. We also ship cars, SUVs, pickups, heavy equipment and full or shared containers, and we run a Business Desk for shop owners who buy in bulk from US stores.
Pickups in Washington DC run on our scheduled Saturday route, with a minimum of 2 barrels or boxes per pickup. The next Pickup Saturdays are October 24, November 7 and November 21, 2026. If you are shipping for Christmas, book your pickup by Saturday, November 21, 2026. The estimated arrival in Ghana is December 20 to 24.
This guide walks through each service, what it costs where we publish a price, what is quoted in writing, and how to prepare for your pickup day. It is written for Ghanaian and West African families and business owners in DC, and for anyone sending goods to family or customers back home.
Where we pick up in Washington DC
We cover every ward of Washington DC. That includes Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast, from Petworth and Brookland to Anacostia, Congress Heights and the neighborhoods along the Anacostia River. If you live in an apartment building, a rowhouse or a single-family home, we come to your address.
We also pick up in nearby communities: Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Hyattsville and Alexandria. Many DC customers have family just across the line in Maryland or Virginia, and it helps to know we can collect from those addresses on the same route.
If your town is not listed, message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether we can reach you and on which date. We would rather confirm than have you guess. Our Washington DC pickup page has the current route details.
Pickup Saturdays in Washington DC
Our DC pickups run on scheduled Saturdays as part of the Maryland, DC, Virginia and Delaware route. The dates to plan around are Saturday, October 24, Saturday, November 7 and Saturday, November 21, 2026. We call these Pickup Saturdays because they are the days to organize your barrels, boxes and paperwork around.
The minimum is 2 barrels or boxes per pickup. That minimum is easy to meet when you are sending a barrel of clothes and a box of shoes, or when you combine with family.
Neighbors, family members, churches and community associations can combine shipments at one address for a group pickup. If three households on your block are each sending a barrel, one address and one pickup can serve all of them. It saves everyone a trip and keeps the schedule simple. Tell us at booking how many barrels and boxes will be at the address so the driver arrives prepared.
Pickup dates fill as the holidays approach. If you are aiming for Christmas, book early rather than waiting for the last Saturday.
Barrels, boxes, totes, suitcases and bags of rice
This is the core of what we do for DC families. You pack a 55-gallon barrel, a 65-gallon barrel or a 75 to 77-gallon jumbo barrel, and we collect it from your door. We also ship boxes in retail sizes, from a small U-Haul box to a jumbo box, plus wardrobe boxes, electronics boxes, Home Depot boxes, coolers, tote bags, tote boxes, suitcases and bags of rice. A 25 kg bag of rice and a 50 kg bag of rice can both be picked up and shipped.
The 55-gallon barrel price to Ghana is $190. That price includes door pickup from Boston to Washington DC, ocean freight to Tema, customs clearance at Tema, Ghana import duties on personal effects, and door delivery in Accra and Tema. Delivery to other Ghana cities such as Kumasi or Takoradi is quoted separately before booking.
Togo and Cote d'Ivoire cost a little more per item. We will show the difference on your written quote.
If you want a guide price before you call, use the free instant estimate at guldstreetshipping.com/topics/estimate/. It is a guide only. Contact sales for current prices and a written quote. The full barrel service is described at /services/barrel-shipping/.
One point that comes up often: the $190 barrel price ships a barrel you packed yourself. If you want us to buy the groceries and essentials and fill the barrel for you, that is a different service, described below.
Fill-a-Barrel for family
If you cannot shop and pack yourself, we can do it. We buy groceries and essentials, pack them, photograph the contents and ship a 55-gallon barrel to Accra or Tema. The Essentials Barrel is $580 and includes about $250 of goods. The Family Barrel is $730 with about $400 of goods, and the Premium Barrel is $930 with about $600 of goods. The price is the goods at cost with receipts, a Shop and Fill fee of $75 or 12 percent if higher, an empty barrel at $65 and barrel shipping at $190. You pay in full before we shop, and any difference from the goods budget is settled on the final statement. Togo and Cote d'Ivoire add $20. Details are at guldstreetshipping.com/fill-a-barrel/.
Appliances, furniture, mattresses and televisions
Beyond barrels, we ship household goods from DC addresses. Sofas, folding tables, mattresses and televisions are all part of the service, and prices for mattresses and televisions are published in the instant estimate at /topics/estimate/.
From the published list: a 3-seater sofa is $600 and a 4-seater sofa is $750. A 4 ft round folding table is $70 and a 6 ft rectangular folding table is $65. A 150 qt cooler or ice chest is $110 to Ghana. A TV box for a television up to 70 inches is $50 as a packing supply.
Appliances need care. Used fridges, freezers and air conditioners are banned from import into Ghana. New units are fine. If you are buying a new fridge or freezer for family, keep the receipt and the packaging, and tell us at booking so we plan the packing and the paperwork.
If you need help packing, we offer packing services and supplies. A Ready-to-Pack Wardrobe Kit is $49, a Family Closet Kit is $155, and a Ghana-Ready Packing Service starts at $449, quoted after photos or an item list. A TV box up to 70 inches is $50, and an empty 55-gallon barrel with lid is $65. There is a $35 flat transportation fee when we buy and bring supplies or make a packing visit, free with your booked pickup or an existing route, and same-day or urgent requests add $30.
Cars, SUVs and pickups from Washington DC
We ship cars, SUVs, pickup trucks and commercial trucks from Washington DC to Ghana by RoRo or by container. That includes cars bought at auctions in the state. Auction purchases are common among DC customers, and we can work with the auction release documents you receive.
USA and Canada vehicle shipments are quoted per job in writing. We do not publish a flat car rate because the variables matter: the vehicle, the port, the sailing and the condition. Ask for a written quote and you will get a clear number.
Car quotes exclude inland transport and every service before the car reaches our warehouse, any GS 4510 inspection once it is reinstated, and Ghana duties and port charges. Read the quote with those exclusions in mind so there are no surprises.
Before you buy, check eligibility. Ghana bars flood, fire, rebuilt and salvage vehicles. Right-hand-drive vehicles are admitted only under a regulated conversion framework that is still being set up. Reports on the used-vehicle age limit conflict, with some saying 10 years and others 15, so confirm the age limit before buying. Our free Ghana car eligibility checker at /advocate/eligibility/ walks you through the questions.
On the Ghana inspection: the GS 4510 pre-shipment inspection and Certificate of Conformity were due from October 1, 2026, but the Ghana Standards Authority suspended the inspection on October 5, 2026, with no new date announced. We will tell you the position at booking. Do not assume the inspection is currently required.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection needs vehicle title documents at least 72 hours before export. Have your title ready early. The vehicle service is described at /services/vehicle-shipping/.
Heavy equipment, generators and containers
For business owners and contractors in DC, we ship heavy equipment and machinery by RoRo, flat rack, open top or breakbulk as the cargo requires. Generators, construction equipment and machinery are quoted per job in writing.
We also handle full container load (FCL) and shared container load (LCL) shipments. If you have enough cargo for a full container, it sails as yours. If you have a smaller load, a shared container lets you ship without paying for space you do not use. Both are quoted per job.
Containers and equipment from the USA and Canada are quoted in writing, and the same exclusions apply as for vehicles: inland transport and every service before the cargo reaches our warehouse, any GS 4510 inspection once it is reinstated, and Ghana duties and port charges.
For Ghana clearance, the Ghana Shippers' Authority registration is required before ICUMS processing under Act 1122, enforced from August 2026. The PUBD is filed on arrival or within 48 hours. For anything else regulatory, confirm with the agency or a licensed customs house agent. Our commercial freight page is at /services/commercial-freight-ghana/.
Business Desk bulk buying for shop owners
Ghanaians often call it bulk buying. Shop owners in DC use our Business Desk to buy in bulk from Amazon, Walmart, Target, wholesale clubs, distributors, Alibaba and 1688, within each seller's purchase limits. We buy, photo-check every item, consolidate and pack, then ship to Ghana.
Orders we buy for the customer ship by air every week. Dedicated full containers sail on the next weekly departure. Shared containers go on our consolidation schedule, confirmed at booking. Customers can also have their own suppliers deliver to our warehouse, but only after the full quote is paid.
One quote covers the whole job, paid in full upfront. Every order gets an itemized invoice, a packing list for Ghana customs and a monthly statement. Business shipments are quoted per shipment in writing. See /business/business-desk/.
Shop and Ship: buying from any US store
If you are not running a shop but want to buy from a US store that will not ship to Ghana, Shop and Ship is the answer. We buy the item, photo-check it when it arrives, and ship it to Ghana. One quote covers the purchase and the shipping, paid in full upfront. Start at /shop-and-ship/order/.
This works for electronics, tools, parts, clothing and household goods. Because we photo-check every item, you see what arrived before it leaves our warehouse.
Door delivery and last-mile delivery in Ghana
Getting the cargo to Tema is only part of the job. We collect from Tema, Takoradi, Kotoka cargo terminal or consolidator warehouses and deliver to the door anywhere in Ghana. That includes cargo shipped by other companies. If a relative shipped a barrel through another company and it is sitting at a warehouse, we can collect it and bring it to the family home.
We also handle local pickup and delivery from Boston to Washington DC. Last-mile delivery is quoted per delivery. See /services/last-mile-delivery/.
For barrel shipments to Accra and Tema, door delivery is already included in the $190 price. For other Ghana cities, delivery is quoted separately before booking.
Shipper's Advocate for bigger shipments
When a shipment is large or the stakes are high, the Shipper's Advocate service gives you protection and advice. Members pay 20 percent less on services. It suits business owners importing equipment, families sending a container, and anyone who wants a second set of eyes on the documents and the plan. Details are at /advocate/.

Before your Pickup Saturday: a checklist
- Confirm your pickup date by WhatsApp or phone, and tell us how many barrels and boxes will be at the address. The minimum is 2.
- If you are combining with neighbors, family or church members, agree on one address and list every item for that address.
- Pack barrels and boxes securely. Download the free packing guide and follow it.
- Keep receipts for new appliances, especially fridges, freezers and air conditioners, since used units are banned from Ghana import.
- For vehicles, have the title ready at least 72 hours before export for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and run the free eligibility checker before you buy.
- Review your written quote and invoice. Check the delivery city in Ghana and whether last-mile delivery is included or quoted separately.
- Pay in full before loading. There is no deposit.
- Be reachable on pickup day so the driver can confirm arrival at your DC address.
How booking works
Start with a WhatsApp message or a call. Tell us what you are shipping, the pickup address in DC and your preferred Pickup Saturday. We send a written price and confirm the pickup date. You receive an invoice, and you pay in full before loading.
Payment is online by card or PayPal, or by Cash App or cash to the driver at pickup. Every invoice shows a card and PayPal price and a 3 percent lower non-card price. Cash to the driver at pickup is available for barrel and box shipments only. For vehicles, heavy equipment, containers and commercial cargo, there is no cash; card payments are welcome.
We do not accept Zelle, bank transfer or wire. There is no deposit.
Ghana rules to keep in mind
A few rules affect DC shippers. Ghana Shippers' Authority registration is required before ICUMS processing under Act 1122, enforced from August 2026. The PUBD is filed on arrival or within 48 hours. Used fridges, freezers and air conditioners are banned. Flood, fire, rebuilt and salvage vehicles are barred. Right-hand-drive vehicles are admitted only under a regulated conversion framework still being set up. Reports on the used-vehicle age limit conflict, so confirm the age limit before buying. The GS 4510 inspection was suspended on October 5, 2026, with no new date announced. For anything else regulatory, confirm with the agency or a licensed customs house agent.
Ghana's 2026 VAT reform set a single effective VAT rate of 20 percent including NHIL and GETFund. Your customs house agent will apply the rules to your shipment.
