A Guldstreet Shipping Research Report
By the Guldstreet Research Team, Guldstreet Shipping
Accurate as of November 4, 2026. Rules, taxes and fees change. Confirm the details with the relevant agency or a licensed customs house agent before you ship.
Can you ship appliances and household goods to Ghana?
Yes, with two important limits. Used fridges, freezers and air conditioners are banned from import into Ghana, so do not buy a used cooling appliance for shipment. Everything else in the normal household range, from a new microwave and a new chest freezer to sofas, wardrobes, dishes, bedding and personal effects, can move by ocean to Tema and on to Accra, Kumasi and other cities.
The practical answer for most readers in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, DC and Delaware is to book a pickup, have every barrel and box measured at pickup, and get one written price that covers door pickup, ocean freight to Tema, customs clearance at Tema, Ghana import duties on personal effects, and door delivery in Accra and Tema. That is what the Guldstreet barrel and box service does. A 55-gallon barrel to Ghana, measured at pickup, is $190.
What follows is the working method: what to buy, what to leave behind, how to pack, how the price is built, and where the customs risk sits.
Start with the appliance rules, not the shopping list
Ghana bans used fridges, freezers and air conditioners. If you are clearing out a home in the US and want to send the old chest freezer to family, that shipment is barred. Buy new, keep the receipt, and pack it in its retail carton where possible.
For vehicles and heavy equipment the rules are different and stricter, and they are covered in separate guides. For household goods, the appliance rule above is the one that catches most people.
For anything else regulatory, confirm with the agency or a licensed customs house agent before you buy. Rules change, and a written confirmation is worth more than a forum post.
What ships well and what to leave behind
Household goods that travel well by ocean include clothing, bedding, towels, curtains, dishes and cookware, small kitchen appliances, new microwaves, new fans, new small freezers, furniture that can be dismantled, tools, toys, books, and personal effects. These are the contents of most family barrels and wardrobe boxes.
Leave behind or reconsider:
- Used fridges, freezers and air conditioners, which are banned.
- Flood, fire, rebuilt and salvage vehicles, which are barred. This matters if a household move includes a car.
- Anything flammable, pressurized or hazardous, which does not belong in a household barrel.
- Items you cannot document if a customs question arises. Keep receipts for new appliances.
If you are shipping a car as part of the move, remember that U.S. CBP needs vehicle title documents at least 72 hours before export, and that Ghana rules on the used-vehicle age limit conflict, with reports citing 10 and 15 years. Confirm the age limit before buying a vehicle for export.
How the barrel and box price is built
Guldstreet charges by the barrel or box, measured at pickup. A larger barrel or box is charged at its real size before loading, so the price you see at booking is the price that holds. Ask for a photo of each barrel or box with a tape measure or its capacity stamp when you book.
Examples of current prices to Ghana, measured at pickup:
- 55-gallon barrel: $190
- 65-gallon barrel: $220
- 75 to 77-gallon jumbo barrel: $240
- Large box, 18 x 18 x 16 in: $100
- Extra large box, 18 x 18 x 24 in: $130
- Wardrobe box large, 24 x 24 x 48 in: $300
- Electronics box large, 24.5 x 24.5 x 27.5 in: $230
The barrel price includes door pickup from Boston to Washington DC, ocean freight to Tema, customs clearance at Tema, Ghana import duties on personal effects, and door delivery in Accra and Tema. Delivery to other Ghana cities such as Kumasi or Takoradi is quoted separately before booking.
Appliances that do not fit a standard barrel or box are quoted per job. Do not guess the price from the barrel table. Send photos and dimensions and ask for a written quote.
Packing appliances so they arrive usable
Ocean freight is hard on cardboard and hard on anything with glass, coils or a compressor. Pack for the sea, not for a moving van.
For a new microwave or small freezer, keep the retail carton and the foam inserts. Add corner protection and tape the door shut. For a new chest freezer, strap or tape the lid and protect the compressor area from impact. For furniture, remove legs where possible, bag the hardware and tape it to the piece. For dishes, wrap each item and stand plates on edge rather than flat.
Guldstreet publishes a free, printable packing guide at https://guldstreetshipping.com/packing-guide/. Share it with every barrel or box customer once a pickup is booked. It is the single most useful document before packing day.
If you would rather not pack, Guldstreet offers packing services and supplies. A Ready-to-Pack Wardrobe Kit is $49, a Family Closet Kit with three large wardrobe boxes, tape, labels, paper, a checklist and a 15-minute call is $155, and a Ghana-Ready Packing Service starts at $449 and is quoted after photos or an item list. Supplies are paid in full before we shop or arrive, and supplies are not refundable once delivered.
A practical checklist before pickup day
- Confirm no used fridges, freezers or air conditioners are in the load.
- Keep receipts for every new appliance.
- Photograph each barrel and box with a tape measure or its capacity stamp.
- Weigh and measure anything that will not fit a standard barrel or box, and request a written quote.
- Pack the packing guide checklist item by item.
- Label every barrel and box with the consignee name and phone number in Ghana.
- Pay the invoice in full before pickup. There is no deposit.
- Keep the packing list for Ghana customs.
Pickup areas and the Christmas cutoff
Guldstreet picks up any day in New York City, Long Island, Westchester, New Jersey and Philadelphia, with no minimum. Scheduled Sunday pickups cover Maryland, Washington DC, Northern Virginia and Delaware, and Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, with a minimum of 2 barrels or boxes per pickup at the same prices. Pennsylvania outside Philadelphia is also a Sunday area, with the date confirmed at booking.
For Christmas 2026, book your pickup by November 28 for New York City and New Jersey pickups, November 25 for Philadelphia pickups, and November 21 for all Sunday pickup areas. Estimated arrival is December 20 to 24. The vessel and estimated arrival are confirmed when cargo sails.
Payment, deposits and what is not included
There is no deposit. The invoice is paid in full before pickup, online by card or PayPal, or by Cash App or cash to the driver before loading. Every invoice shows a card or PayPal price and a 3% lower non-card price. Guldstreet does not accept Zelle, bank transfer or wire.
For barrels and boxes, the price above includes the services listed earlier. It does not include delivery to Ghana cities outside Accra and Tema, which is quoted separately, or any special handling for oversized appliances, which is quoted per job.
For USA and Canada vehicles, equipment and containers, quotes are per job in writing. Car quotes exclude inland transport and every service before the car reaches our warehouse, any GS 4510 inspection once it is reinstated, and Ghana duties and port charges. Containers are quoted separately and are not part of a household barrel booking.
Customs and the paperwork that matters
Ghana Shippers' Authority registration is required before ICUMS processing under Act 1122, enforced from August 2026. The PUBD is filed on arrival or within 48 hours. The GS 4510 used-vehicle pre-shipment inspection and Certificate of Conformity were due from October 1, 2026 but were suspended by the Ghana Standards Authority on October 5, 2026, with no new date announced. That suspension concerns used vehicles, not household goods, but it is the kind of change that shows why you confirm current rules before shipping.
Ghana's 2026 VAT reform set a single effective VAT rate of 20% including NHIL and GETFund. For personal effects shipped in the barrel and box service, Ghana import duties on personal effects are included in the price. For commercial cargo, duties and taxes are quoted and handled separately.
Keep an itemized packing list. It helps your customs house agent and it helps you if a question comes up. For anything beyond the rules stated here, confirm with the agency or a licensed customs house agent.
Comparison: which shipping route fits your load
| Load type | Typical use | How it is priced | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55-gallon barrel | Clothing, bedding, small appliances, personal effects | $190, measured at pickup | No used cooling appliances inside |
| Wardrobe or large box | Dishes, curtains, wardrobe contents, small furniture parts | By box size, measured at pickup | Dimensions and capacity stamp photo |
| Oversized appliance or furniture | New freezer, sofa, large furniture | Quoted per job in writing | Dimensions, photos, delivery city |
| Fill-a-Barrel for Family | Groceries and essentials bought and packed for you | Essentials Barrel $580, Family Barrel $730, Premium Barrel $930 | Paid in full before we shop |
| Full container (FCL) | Whole household or commercial load | 20ft from 5,450 USD, 40ft from 6,250 USD, non-card price | Excludes Tema terminal handling, clearance, duties, insurance |
If someone tells you the $190 barrel price includes the goods, that is not correct. The $190 ships a barrel you packed. Filled barrels start at $580.
Buying appliances in the US for family in Ghana
Many readers do not have the appliance in hand. They want to buy it in the US and send it. Shop and Ship handles that: send product links from any US store, receive one written quote covering the item cost, the buying fee and shipping, and pay by card or PayPal from anywhere. No US card or US address is needed, and family in the US can pay by Cash App. We buy the items, send photos and receipts, exchange anything wrong before it ships, consolidate many stores into one shipment and ship to Ghana, Togo, Cote d'Ivoire or Nigeria. Door delivery is included in Accra and Tema, and other cities are quoted.
For larger household buying, the Business Desk buys in bulk from Amazon, Walmart, Target, wholesale clubs, distributors, Alibaba and 1688 within each seller's purchase limits, photo-checks every item, consolidates and packs. Business shipments are quoted per shipment in writing.
Where the risk sits, and how to reduce it
The main risks in a household shipment are the wrong appliance, poor packing, a size surprise at pickup and a customs question. Each has a simple control. Buy new cooling appliances and keep receipts. Pack to the free guide or pay for packing help. Photograph every barrel and box with a tape measure. Keep an itemized packing list and confirm current rules with your customs house agent.
Guldstreet measures, photographs, seals and tracks every item, with one written price and no surprises at Tema. That is the protection you are buying, and it is worth more than a few dollars saved on a barrel that arrives crushed.
