Shipping Guide

How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Container to Ghana?

There is no single container price to Ghana, because the number depends on the box, the cargo and the route. Here is how 20ft and 40ft shipments are priced, what sits inside the quote, and how to get yours in writing.

How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Container to Ghana?

A Guldstreet Shipping Research Report

By the Guldstreet Research Team, Guldstreet Shipping

Accurate as of October 21, 2026. Rules, taxes and fees change. Confirm the details with the relevant agency or a licensed customs house agent before you ship.

The short answer on container costs to Ghana

Guldstreet Shipping does not publish a flat rate for a 20ft or 40ft container to Ghana. USA and Canada vehicle, equipment and container shipments are quoted per job, in writing, after we know the cargo, the origin, the destination city and the loading method. That is not evasion. A container of household goods moving from Newark is a different job from a flat rack of machinery leaving Houston, and a quote built on averages would mislead you.

What you can do today is understand the parts of the price, decide between full container load (FCL) and shared container (LCL), and then ask for a written quote with those parts itemized. This guide walks through each of them, with the Ghana rules that affect the total.

FCL or LCL: the first decision that sets your cost

A full container load means the box is yours. You pay for the container and the space inside it, whether you fill it or not. A shared container, or less than container load, means you pay for the volume you use and the consolidator fills the rest.

Guldstreet runs both. Full container (FCL) and shared container (LCL) shipments to Ghana are part of our current work, alongside cars, trucks and heavy equipment. For business customers using our Business Desk, dedicated full containers sail on the next weekly departure, while shared containers go on our consolidation schedule, confirmed at booking.

When FCL usually makes sense

  • You have enough cargo to fill most of a 20ft box, or you value the privacy of a sealed container.
  • Your goods are fragile, high value, or awkward to co-load with strangers' cargo.
  • You are shipping building materials, bulk food staples or business inventory in volume.
  • You want one packing list and one customs entry for the whole shipment.

When LCL usually makes sense

  • You are shipping a few pallets, a room of furniture, or a first order to test a market.
  • You do not want to pay for air inside a box you cannot fill.
  • Your cargo can wait for the consolidation schedule, confirmed at booking.
  • You are shipping barrels or boxes alongside other customers, which is how most of our household customers ship.

One caution on LCL: every hand that touches a shared container adds handling. If your cargo is heavy machinery or a vehicle, ask specifically about flat rack, open top or breakbulk options, because not every piece of equipment belongs inside a closed box.

What actually drives the price of a 20ft or 40ft container

When a quote lands on your desk, it is built from a set of cost lines. Knowing them helps you compare quotes honestly and spot the ones that leave things out.

Origin charges

These cover getting the container to your cargo and your cargo into the container: drayage from the terminal, loading labor, lashing and securing, and documentation. If you are in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland or the DC area, the port you sail from and the distance to it change this line.

Ocean freight

This is the water leg to Tema. It moves with fuel costs, capacity and season. It is also the line most likely to be quoted as a range rather than a fixed figure until the booking is confirmed.

Destination charges and Ghana duties

On arrival, the container attracts terminal handling, customs clearance work and Ghana import duties and port charges. Duty depends on what is inside, and on how the goods are classified and valued. We do not publish duty rates, because they are set by Ghanaian authorities and applied to your specific cargo. Confirm the duty treatment of your goods with a licensed customs house agent before you commit to a purchase.

Cargo type and weight

A container of clothing and a container of tile weigh very differently. Heavy cargo can hit road weight limits and require different chassis or permits. Machinery may need flat rack or open top equipment rather than a standard box. Tell your quote writer what the cargo actually is, in plain terms, including weight.

20ft versus 40ft: a practical comparison

The table below compares the two standard boxes on the factors that change your quote. It does not list prices, because those are quoted per job.

Factor20ft container40ft container
Typical useDense, heavy cargo; a single vehicle; a compact householdBulky, lighter cargo; furniture; business inventory in volume
Weight versus volumeEasier to reach weight limits before the box is fullEasier to fill by volume before weight becomes the issue
Cost per unit of cargoHigher per cubic foot when the box is not fullLower per cubic foot when you can fill it
Handling in GhanaEasier on smaller roads and tighter delivery sitesNeeds more room at the delivery address and for unloading

If you are near the line between the two, ask for both in the same written quote. The comparison usually settles the question faster than any rule of thumb.

Shipping a container from the USA to Ghana: what to prepare

Paperwork delays cost more than freight. Before you ask for a quote, gather the following. It also makes the quote more accurate.

  1. An item list. Not a category, an actual list. Furniture, appliances, boxes of household goods, machinery with model numbers.
  2. Weights and dimensions for anything oversized or heavy, including crates and skids.
  3. The delivery city in Ghana. Accra and Tema are not the same delivery as Kumasi or Takoradi, and the last mile is quoted separately.
  4. Vehicle documents, if a vehicle is inside. U.S. CBP needs vehicle title documents at least 72 hours before export.
  5. Your Ghana Shippers' Authority registration. Registration is required before ICUMS processing under Act 1122, enforced from August 2026. Start it early.
  6. A named contact in Ghana who can receive the cargo and sign for delivery.

For anything else regulatory, confirm with the agency involved or a licensed customs house agent. Rules change, and a guide written today is not a substitute for a current ruling on your goods.

Ghana import rules that affect containers and their contents

Some of the rules that catch importers are not about containers at all, but about what is inside them. A container held at Tema because of one barred item is an expensive container.

Vehicles inside a container

Flood, fire, rebuilt and salvage vehicles are barred from Ghana. Right-hand-drive vehicles are admitted only under a regulated conversion framework that is still being set up. Reports on the used-vehicle age limit conflict, with figures of 10 and 15 years in circulation, so confirm the age limit before you buy a vehicle to ship. The GS 4510 used-vehicle pre-shipment inspection and Certificate of Conformity were due from October 1, 2026, but the Ghana Standards Authority suspended the inspection on October 5, 2026, with no new date announced. Do not budget for an inspection as though it is currently running, and do not assume it will stay suspended.

Household appliances and goods

Used fridges, freezers and air conditioners are banned from import into Ghana. If you are shipping a household, leave them out of the container rather than risk the shipment.

Taxes on arrival

Ghana's 2026 VAT reform set a single effective VAT rate of 20 percent including NHIL and GETFund. The PUBD is filed on arrival or within 48 hours. Your customs house agent should confirm how these apply to your specific goods and value.

How Guldstreet quotes containers, and what the quote excludes

USA and Canada vehicle, equipment and container shipments are quoted per job in writing. There is no deposit to book. The invoice is paid in full before pickup, online by card or PayPal, or by Cash App. Cash to the driver is accepted for barrel and box shipments only, not for vehicles, heavy equipment, containers or commercial cargo. Card payments are welcome for those.

Every invoice shows a card or PayPal price and a 3 percent lower non-card price. We accept PayPal, Cash App, or cash to the driver for barrel and box balances at pickup. We do not accept Zelle, bank transfer or wire.

For vehicle quotes, be clear about the exclusions. A car quote excludes inland transport and every service before the car reaches our warehouse, any GS 4510 inspection once it is reinstated, and Ghana duties and port charges. Ask for the same clarity on a container quote: what is inside the number, and what will be invoiced separately.

If your container is part of a business shipment, the Business Desk quotes per shipment in writing. One quote covers the whole job, paid in full upfront, and every order gets an itemized invoice, a packing list for Ghana customs and a monthly statement. There are no published business freight rates, and that is deliberate: the job defines the price.

If a container is more than you need

Plenty of readers arrive at this page planning a container and leave with a better plan. If you are shipping household goods, clothes, kitchen items and a few electronics, a shared container or a set of barrels and boxes will usually cost less than a box you cannot fill.

Our barrel and box service runs door to door from Boston to Washington DC, including New York City, Long Island, Westchester, New Jersey and Philadelphia any day with no minimum, and Sunday pickups in Maryland, DC, Northern Virginia, Delaware, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania outside Philadelphia with a two piece minimum. A 55-gallon barrel to Ghana is 190 dollars, and that price includes door pickup, ocean freight to Tema, customs clearance at Tema, Ghana import duties on personal effects, and door delivery in Accra and Tema. Delivery to other Ghana cities is quoted separately before booking.

If you want a barrel filled with groceries and essentials rather than packing it yourself, our Fill-a-Barrel service starts at 580 dollars for the Essentials Barrel. The 190 dollar figure ships a barrel you packed; it does not include the goods.

For a rough sense of scale before you call, the instant price estimate at guldstreetshipping.com/topics/estimate/ is a guide only. Customers must contact sales for current prices and a written quote.

Checklist before you request a container quote

  • Item list with weights and dimensions for anything oversized.
  • Origin address and whether the site can take a 40ft container and a chassis.
  • Destination city in Ghana and whether the delivery address can receive and unload.
  • FCL or LCL preference, or ask for both.
  • Vehicle titles ready at least 72 hours before export, if applicable.
  • Ghana Shippers' Authority registration started, since it is required before ICUMS processing.
  • Confirmation that nothing in the load is barred, including used fridges, freezers, air conditioners and flood, fire, rebuilt or salvage vehicles.
  • A named receiving contact in Ghana with a phone number.
  • A written quote that states what is included and what is billed separately.

Once the booking is confirmed and the cargo sails, the vessel and estimated arrival are confirmed to you. We do not publish transit times, because a number on a page is not a commitment on your shipment.

Next step

Send the item list, the origin and the Ghana delivery city, and ask for the quote in writing. If you are comparing a container against barrels or a shared box, say so, and we will price the alternatives on the same request. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to ship a 40ft container to Ghana?

Guldstreet quotes USA and Canada container shipments per job in writing, so there is no published flat rate. The number depends on the origin, the cargo, the loading method and the delivery city in Ghana. Send an item list with weights and dimensions and you will get an itemized quote that states what is included and what is billed separately.

Is it cheaper to ship a 20ft or 40ft container to Ghana?

A 40ft container usually costs less per unit of cargo when you can fill it, because the ocean and handling costs are spread over more volume. A 20ft box is often the better fit for dense or heavy cargo, or for a load that will not fill a larger box. Ask for both in the same written quote and compare them against your actual cargo.

What is the difference between FCL and LCL to Tema?

FCL means the container is yours and you pay for the whole box. LCL means you pay for the volume you use in a shared container. Guldstreet handles both. Shared containers go on our consolidation schedule, confirmed at booking, while dedicated full containers for Business Desk orders sail on the next weekly departure.

Does a container quote include Ghana duties and port charges?

Not automatically, and you should check every quote on this point. Our vehicle quotes exclude Ghana duties and port charges, along with inland transport before the car reaches our warehouse and any GS 4510 inspection once it is reinstated. Ask the same question of any container quote and get the answer in writing.

Can I put a car in a container to Ghana?

Yes, and the vehicle rules still apply. Flood, fire, rebuilt and salvage vehicles are barred, and right-hand-drive vehicles are admitted only under a conversion framework still being set up. Reports on the used-vehicle age limit conflict, so confirm the age limit before buying. U.S. CBP needs title documents at least 72 hours before export.
