What China to Ghana shipping involves
China to Ghana shipping by sea is a chain of separate jobs: buying the goods, getting them to a Chinese port, loading them, sailing to Tema, clearing customs in Ghana, and delivering to the final address. Each link has its own paperwork and its own failure points. The route itself is well established. The difficulty is in the details, especially when the buyer is in the United States and the goods are in Guangzhou, Yiwu, or Shenzhen.
Guldstreet Shipping is a New York based boutique global shipping company. We ship cars, heavy equipment, and containers to Ghana from the USA, Canada, and China. For China to Ghana cargo, we handle full container (FCL) and shared container (LCL) shipments, and we can buy goods on your behalf from Alibaba, 1688, and other Chinese suppliers through our Business Desk. If you are in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, or the Washington DC area, we can also consolidate your China purchases with barrels, boxes, and personal effects moving to Ghana.
This guide covers the practical sequence: choosing FCL or LCL, using an agent for 1688, preparing documents, understanding Ghana rules, and avoiding the mistakes that cause cargo to sit at Tema.
FCL or LCL: the first decision
Full container load (FCL) means one shipper uses the whole container. Shared container load (LCL) means your cargo shares space with other shipments. The choice affects cost, handling, and risk.
FCL is usually better when you have enough cargo to fill a 20 foot or 40 foot container, when the goods are fragile or high value, or when you want to avoid extra handling. Your container is sealed at origin and opened at destination. LCL is better for smaller volumes, first orders, or mixed goods. You pay for the space you use, but your cargo is handled more often and may wait for consolidation.
At Guldstreet, dedicated full containers sail on the next weekly departure. Shared containers go on our consolidation schedule, confirmed at booking. We do not publish business freight rates because every shipment is different. Business shipments are quoted per shipment in writing. That quote covers the whole job, paid in full upfront, and every order gets an itemized invoice, a packing list for Ghana customs, and a monthly statement.
Buying from Alibaba and 1688
Alibaba is the export facing platform most buyers know. 1688 is the domestic Chinese wholesale platform, often with lower prices but no export service. Many Ghanaian buyers use a 1688 agent to buy, receive, inspect, and consolidate goods before shipping.
Guldstreet's Business Desk works as that buying and consolidation service. We buy in bulk for customers from Amazon, Walmart, Target, wholesale clubs, distributors, Alibaba, and 1688 within each seller's purchase limits. We photo check every item, consolidate and pack, then ship to Ghana. Orders we buy for the customer ship by air every week. Dedicated full containers sail on the next weekly departure. Shared containers go on our consolidation schedule, confirmed at booking.
You can also have your own suppliers deliver to our warehouse, but only after the full quote is paid. That rule protects both sides: it confirms the shipment is funded and gives us the information we need to receive, label, and pack correctly.
What to check before you pay a Chinese supplier
- Confirm the exact model, size, voltage, and plug type for Ghana.
- Ask for the net weight and gross weight, plus carton dimensions.
- Confirm whether the price includes export packing and delivery to the port or warehouse.
- Ask for photos or a short video of the actual goods before they leave the factory.
- Check whether the product needs any Ghana standard or permit before you buy.
- Keep the commercial invoice, packing list, and payment receipts.
China to Ghana vehicle rates
Guldstreet ships vehicles from China to Ghana when they are fuel or hybrid (HEV) and have valid export documentation. The published rates are per vehicle:
| Vehicle type | Rate (USD) |
|---|---|
| Large SUV or pickup truck | 3,500 |
| Compact SUV | 2,800 |
| Large sedan | 2,350 |
| Compact sedan | 1,700 |
Add 500 USD per vehicle if export documentation is not available. These rates apply to fuel and hybrid HEV vehicles only. Electric vehicles are not covered by this rate schedule. For USA and Canada vehicle, equipment, and container shipments, we quote per job in writing.
Ghana vehicle import rules matter here. The used vehicle pre shipment inspection and Certificate of Conformity under GS 4510 were due from October 1, 2026, but the Ghana Standards Authority suspended the inspection on October 5, 2026, with no new date announced. Do not assume the inspection is currently required. Reports on the used vehicle age limit conflict, with some saying 10 years and others 15 years. Confirm the age limit before you buy. Flood, fire, rebuilt, and salvage vehicles are barred. Right hand drive vehicles are admitted only under a regulated conversion framework that is still being set up.
Documents for China to Ghana sea freight
Clean documents are the difference between a smooth clearance and a long stay at Tema. The exact list depends on the cargo, but most shipments need the following:
- Commercial invoice from the supplier.
- Packing list with carton counts, weights, and dimensions.
- Bill of lading or sea waybill.
- Certificate of origin where applicable.
- Import declaration and Ghana customs documents.
- Permits or standards certificates for regulated goods.
- For vehicles, title and export documents, plus the GS 4510 file if it is reinstated.
Ghana Shippers' Authority registration is required before ICUMS processing under Act 1122, enforced from August 2026. The PUBD is filed on arrival or within 48 hours. For anything else regulatory, confirm with the agency or a licensed customs house agent. Rules change, and the cost of a wrong assumption is usually paid at the port.
Ghana import rules you should know
Ghana's 2026 VAT reform set a single effective VAT rate of 20 percent including NHIL and GETFund. Used fridges, freezers, and air conditioners are banned. These are not small details. A banned item can be seized, and a misdeclared item can trigger penalties.
For vehicles, the age limit reports conflict, so confirm before buying. Flood, fire, rebuilt, and salvage vehicles are barred. Right hand drive vehicles are admitted only under a regulated conversion framework still being set up. The GS 4510 pre shipment inspection and Certificate of Conformity were suspended on October 5, 2026, with no new date. Never treat the inspection as currently required.
If you are shipping personal effects, barrels, or boxes, the rules are different from commercial cargo. Guldstreet's barrel price to Ghana includes door pickup from Boston to Washington DC, ocean freight to Tema, customs clearance at Tema, Ghana import duties on personal effects, and door delivery in Accra and Tema. Delivery to other Ghana cities such as Kumasi or Takoradi is quoted separately before booking.
Consolidation and the Business Desk
Consolidation is where China to Ghana shipping either saves money or creates chaos. If you buy from several suppliers, someone has to receive the goods, check them, repack them for ocean transit, and prepare one packing list that Ghana customs can follow. That is the Business Desk.
Customers can also have their own suppliers deliver to our warehouse, only after the full quote is paid. One quote covers the whole job, paid in full upfront. Every order gets an itemized invoice, a packing list for Ghana customs, and a monthly statement.
If you are in the New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, or Washington DC area, we can combine your China purchases with barrels, boxes, totes, suitcases, and personal effects moving to Ghana. That is useful when one shipment contains both commercial goods and family items.
Practical checklist before you ship
Use this checklist to keep the shipment moving. It is not a substitute for a written quote or customs advice, but it prevents the most common delays.
- Decide who buys the goods: you, your supplier, or Guldstreet's Business Desk.
- Confirm the product is allowed into Ghana and does not need a special permit.
- Get the full quote in writing and pay the deposit or full amount as required.
- Confirm FCL or LCL, and the sailing or consolidation schedule.
- Collect the commercial invoice, packing list, and any certificates.
- For vehicles, confirm the age limit, the GS 4510 status, and the export documents.
- Register with the Ghana Shippers' Authority before ICUMS processing.
- File the PUBD on arrival or within 48 hours.
- Arrange last mile delivery from Tema, Takoradi, Kotoka cargo terminal, or a consolidator warehouse.
- Keep copies of every document and payment receipt.
Last mile delivery in Ghana
Getting cargo to Tema is only part of the job. The last mile is where many importers lose time. Guldstreet provides collection from Tema, Takoradi, Kotoka cargo terminal, or consolidator warehouses with door delivery anywhere in Ghana, including cargo shipped by other companies. This service is quoted per delivery.
We also provide local pickup and delivery from Boston to Washington DC. If you are in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, or the surrounding area, we can collect barrels, boxes, totes, suitcases, and personal effects and ship them by ocean to Ghana, Togo, and Ivory Coast. For China to Ghana cargo, the last mile is arranged separately and quoted before booking.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Most problems are predictable. A supplier ships the wrong voltage. A carton count does not match the packing list. A vehicle arrives without the right documents. A buyer assumes the GS 4510 inspection is required when it is suspended. A shipment includes a banned item such as a used freezer. Each of these can be avoided with a short conversation before the goods leave China.
Another common mistake is treating a low freight rate as the whole cost. Ocean freight is one line. Customs clearance, duties, port charges, and last mile delivery are separate. Guldstreet's Business Desk quote covers the whole job and is paid in full upfront, so there are no surprise line items later. For personal effects, the barrel price includes door pickup from Boston to Washington DC, ocean freight to Tema, customs clearance at Tema, Ghana import duties on personal effects, and door delivery in Accra and Tema.
Finally, do not guess on regulations. Ghana Shippers' Authority registration is required before ICUMS processing under Act 1122, enforced from August 2026. The PUBD is filed on arrival or within 48 hours. For anything else, confirm with the agency or a licensed customs house agent. That step costs little and protects the whole shipment.
How to start your China to Ghana shipment
Start with a written quote. Tell us what you are buying, where it is in China, whether you need us to buy it, and where it needs to go in Ghana. If you are shipping a vehicle, tell us the make, model, year, and fuel type. If you are shipping personal effects, tell us the pickup address and the delivery city. We will confirm the service, the schedule, and the price in writing before you commit.
For China to Ghana vehicle rates, the published rates are 3,500 USD for a large SUV or pickup truck, 2,800 USD for a compact SUV, 2,350 USD for a large sedan, and 1,700 USD for a compact sedan, for fuel and hybrid HEV vehicles with valid export documentation. Add 500 USD per vehicle if export documentation is not available. USA and Canada vehicle, equipment, and container shipments are quoted per job.
If you are in the New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, or Washington DC area, we can also handle your barrels, boxes, and personal effects to Ghana, Togo, and Ivory Coast. The instant price estimate on our website is a guide only. Contact sales for current prices and a written quote.
