This article is part of our complete guide to shipping from New York to Ghana, which compares every method, price and document in one place.
What Barrel Shipping to Ghana Involves
Barrel shipping to Ghana uses large plastic drums to consolidate personal effects and household goods into a single unit. You pack the barrel, Guldstreet Shipping collects it from your address, and it moves by ocean freight to Ghana. The recipient receives it at the door in Accra or Tema. Delivery to other cities such as Kumasi or Takoradi is quoted separately before booking.
This service is designed for diaspora families and individuals sending clothing, shoes, dry food, small appliances and personal items. It is not a parcel service. Each barrel is handled as a consolidated shipment with customs clearance at Tema.

What the 55-Gallon Barrel Price Includes
The $190 rate for a 55-gallon barrel to Ghana covers door pickup in New York City, New Jersey and Philadelphia, ocean freight to Tema, customs clearance at Tema, Ghana import duties on personal effects, and door delivery in Accra and Tema. Delivery to other Ghana cities such as Kumasi and Takoradi is quoted separately before booking.
This structure means you do not pay separate fees for standard clearance or duties on personal effects. It also means the rate is specific to the listed pickup areas and delivery cities. If your pickup or delivery address falls outside those areas, ask for a written quote before you pack.
How to Pack a Barrel for Ghana
Proper packing protects your goods and helps the barrel seal correctly. Use this checklist before you close the lid.
- Place heavier items at the bottom, such as shoes, canned goods and pots.
- Fill gaps with soft items like clothing and linens.
- Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap or clothing.
- Do not overpack. The lid must seal completely.
- Keep a packing list of everything inside.
- Confirm your pickup address is in New York City, New Jersey or Philadelphia, or request a quote for other areas.
- Book and pay the deposit before the cutoff if you are shipping for Christmas.
