A Guldstreet Shipping Research Report
By the Guldstreet Research Team, Guldstreet Shipping
Accurate as of October 16, 2026. Rules, taxes and fees change. Confirm the details with the relevant agency or a licensed customs house agent before you ship.
What you need to do first
If you want a barrel to reach Ghana for Christmas 2026, the single most important step is to book and pay your deposit by the cutoff for your pickup area. For New York City and New Jersey pickups, that date is November 28. For Philadelphia, it is November 25. For all Saturday pickup areas, including Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, Delaware, the rest of Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, it is November 21.
Guldstreet Shipping picks up barrels and boxes door to door from Boston to Washington DC, ships them by ocean to Tema, clears them through customs, and delivers to Accra and Tema. The 55-gallon barrel rate to Ghana is $190. That price covers door pickup, ocean freight to Tema, customs clearance at Tema, Ghana import duties on personal effects, and door delivery in Accra and Tema. Delivery to other Ghana cities such as Kumasi or Takoradi is quoted separately before booking.
Estimated arrival for Christmas 2026 shipments is December 20 to 24. We do not state transit times in days or weeks. The vessel and estimated arrival are confirmed when your cargo sails.
Christmas 2026 booking cutoffs by pickup area
Cutoffs are the date by which you must book and pay your deposit. They are not the date you start packing. If you miss your cutoff, your barrel moves on the next available schedule, which may arrive after Christmas.
| Pickup area | Book and pay deposit by |
|---|---|
| New York City and New Jersey | November 28 |
| Philadelphia | November 25 |
| Maryland, Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Delaware | November 21 |
| Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts | November 21 |
| Pennsylvania outside Philadelphia | November 21 |
Saturday pickup areas require a minimum of 2 barrels or boxes per pickup, at the same prices. New York City, Long Island, Westchester, New Jersey and Philadelphia pickups are available any day with no minimum.
How much it costs to ship a barrel to Ghana
The 55-gallon barrel rate to Ghana is $190. The 65-gallon barrel is $220, and the 75 to 77-gallon jumbo barrel is $240. For Togo and Ivory Coast, add $20 per barrel: $210, $240 and $260 respectively.
Boxes are priced by exact retail size. A few examples: a small U-Haul box at 16.4 x 12.6 x 12.6 inches is $55; a large U-Haul Medium at 18 x 18 x 16 inches is $100; a jumbo U-Haul Extra-Large at 24 x 18 x 24 inches is $170. Home Depot boxes start at $45 for the small 16 x 10 x 12 inch size and go up by size. What the $190 barrel price includes
The $190 per 55-gallon barrel to Ghana includes:
- Door pickup from Boston to Washington DC
- Ocean freight to Tema
- Customs clearance at Tema
- Ghana import duties on personal effects
- Door delivery in Accra and Tema
Delivery to other Ghana cities such as Kumasi or Takoradi is quoted separately before booking. If you need last mile delivery only, for example a barrel that arrived at Tema or Kotoka cargo terminal through another company, we can collect it and deliver it anywhere in Ghana. That is quoted per delivery.
If you want us to buy the goods and fill the barrel for you, that is a different service. The Essentials Barrel is $580, the Family Barrel is $730, and the Premium Barrel is $930. The price is the goods at cost with receipts, plus a Shop and Fill fee of $75 or 12 percent if higher, plus the empty barrel at $65, plus barrel shipping at $190. Togo and Ivory Coast add $20. Paid in full before we shop. If you thought $190 includes the goods, note that $190 ships a barrel you packed yourself. Filled barrels start at $580.
How to book and pay
A 30 percent deposit confirms a pickup. Deposits can be paid by Cash App or PayPal (card). No cash for deposits.
Every invoice shows a card or PayPal price and a 3 percent lower non-card price. Non-card payment options are Cash App, or cash to the driver at pickup for barrel and box shipments only. No cash for vehicles, heavy equipment, containers or commercial cargo. Card payments are welcome for those.
For barrel and box shipments, you can pay the balance by cash to the driver at pickup if you prefer the non-card price. If you pay by card, the invoice will show the card price.
What to pack in a Christmas barrel
Ghana customs treats personal effects differently from commercial goods. A barrel for family use should contain used or personal items, not new merchandise for resale. The $190 rate includes Ghana import duties on personal effects. If the contents look commercial, the shipment may be assessed differently.
Good candidates for a Christmas barrel:
- Clothing, shoes and coats for family members
- Non-perishable food, including rice, canned goods, spices and dried fish
- Toiletries, soap, toothpaste and diapers
- School supplies, notebooks, pens and backpacks
- Small household items, bedding, towels and kitchen utensils
- Toys and small gifts, declared accurately
- Over-the-counter medicines in original packaging
Do not pack:
- Cash, jewelry or precious stones
- Flammable, corrosive or hazardous materials
- Firearms, ammunition or knives
- Fresh food, plants or seeds
- Used fridges, freezers or air conditioners, which are banned from import into Ghana
- Anything you cannot describe on a customs declaration
We do not handle gold, silver, diamonds or precious stones, crude oil, LNG or refined petroleum, or live animals.
Packing a barrel so it arrives intact
A barrel is a sturdy container, but it is not indestructible. Pack heavy items at the bottom and lighter items on top. Fill gaps with soft goods such as towels or clothing so contents do not shift. Use the original packaging for electronics when possible. Seal liquids in plastic bags and then in a second bag. Tape the lid securely and label the barrel with the recipient's name, address and phone number inside and outside.
Guldstreet offers a free printable packing guide at https://guldstreetshipping.com/packing-guide/. Share it with every barrel or box customer once they book a pickup. If you want help, we offer packing supplies and services. A Ready-to-Pack Wardrobe Kit is $49, a Family Closet Kit is $155, and a Ghana-Ready Packing Service starts at $449, quoted after photos or an item list. There is a $35 flat transportation fee when we buy and bring supplies or make a packing visit; it is free with your booked pickup or an existing route. Same-day or urgent add $30. Supplies are not refundable once delivered, and every job has a written limit.

Ghana import rules that affect your barrel
Ghana Shippers' Authority registration is required before ICUMS processing under Act 1122, enforced from August 2026. Your customs house agent will handle this, but you should confirm the current process before shipping.
The GS 4510 used-vehicle pre-shipment inspection and Certificate of Conformity were due from October 1, 2026, but the Ghana Standards Authority suspended the inspection on October 5, 2026, with no new date announced. This applies to used vehicles, not to personal effects in a barrel, but it is worth knowing if you are also shipping a car.
For barrels and boxes of personal effects, the main requirement is an accurate declaration. The PUBD is filed on arrival or within 48 hours. Ghana's 2026 VAT reform set a single effective VAT rate of 20 percent including NHIL and GETFund. Your barrel rate includes Ghana import duties on personal effects, but if customs reclassifies your goods, additional charges may apply. For anything else regulatory, confirm with the agency or a licensed customs house agent.
Shipping from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, DC and Delaware
Guldstreet Shipping is based in New York and picks up from Boston to Washington DC. We pick up any day in New York City, Long Island, Westchester, New Jersey and Philadelphia with no minimum. For Maryland, Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Delaware, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania outside Philadelphia, we run scheduled Saturday pickups with a minimum of 2 barrels or boxes per pickup, at the same prices.
The Christmas cutoff for Saturday areas is November 21. For New York City and New Jersey, it is November 28. For Philadelphia, it is November 25. If you are shipping from the DC or Delaware area, plan to have your barrels packed and ready by the Saturday before your cutoff.
We also ship to Togo and Ivory Coast. Add $20 per barrel or box to the Ghana rate. The same deadlines apply.
What happens after your barrel is picked up
Once your barrel is picked up, it goes to our warehouse, is consolidated with other cargo, and sails to Tema. The vessel and estimated arrival are confirmed when your cargo sails. We do not quote transit times in days or weeks.
On arrival, we clear customs at Tema and arrange delivery to Accra or Tema. For other Ghana cities, delivery is quoted separately before booking. If you need last mile delivery only, we can collect from Tema, Takoradi, Kotoka cargo terminal or a consolidator warehouse and deliver anywhere in Ghana, including cargo shipped by other companies. That is quoted per delivery.
For Christmas 2026, estimated arrival is December 20 to 24. That estimate depends on the vessel sailing on schedule and on customs clearance. Book early to avoid disappointment.
Common questions about Christmas barrels
Can I ship a barrel and a box together? Yes. The minimum for Saturday pickups is 2 barrels or boxes, and you can mix them. Each is priced separately.
Can I put a TV in a barrel? A TV box up to 70 inches is $50 as a separate box. Packing a TV inside a barrel is not recommended because of the risk of damage.
Can I ship a bag of rice? Yes. We pick up and ship a 25 kg bag of rice for $35, or a 50 kg bag for $65. These are separate from the barrel rate.
Can I pay cash? For barrel and box shipments, you can pay cash to the driver at pickup for the balance, but not for the deposit. Deposits are by Cash App or PayPal (card). No cash for vehicles, heavy equipment, containers or commercial cargo.
What if I miss the cutoff? Your barrel moves on the next available schedule. It may arrive after Christmas. Contact us to confirm the next sailing.
