How to ship cars, heavy equipment and containers to Ghana
If you are shipping a car, pickup truck, commercial truck, piece of heavy equipment or a container to Ghana, the process starts with matching the cargo to the right method and confirming the documents before anything is loaded. Guldstreet Shipping ships vehicles, machinery and containers from the USA, Canada and China to Ghana, using roll-on roll-off (RoRo), flat rack, open top or breakbulk for equipment, and full container (FCL) or shared container (LCL) service for general cargo. USA and Canada vehicle, equipment and container shipments are quoted per job in writing, so the price reflects the actual unit, its dimensions, its condition and the port or door you need.
This guide covers what you need to know before you book, how the loading methods differ, what documents travel with the cargo, what Ghana requires at the port, and how to avoid the delays that cost the most time and money.
What Guldstreet ships to Ghana
Guldstreet moves several categories of cargo into Ghana. Each one has its own loading and documentation path.
- Cars, SUVs, pickup trucks and commercial trucks. These move by RoRo or inside a container, depending on the unit and the route.
- Heavy equipment and machinery. Excavators, loaders, generators, compressors, agricultural equipment and similar units move by RoRo, flat rack, open top or breakbulk as the cargo requires.
- Full container (FCL) shipments. One shipper uses the whole container, which suits household moves, business inventory and mixed cargo that should stay together.
- Shared container (LCL) shipments. Several shippers share container space, which suits smaller loads that do not fill a box.
If you are shipping from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware or the DC area, Guldstreet can arrange pickup and coordinate the move to the port. The same applies to customers in Canada and China who are exporting to Ghana.
USA and Canada vehicle, equipment and container quotes
USA and Canada vehicle, equipment and container shipments are quoted per job. There is no flat rate for a car or a machine because the cost depends on the unit, the loading method, the port pair and the services you need. A written quote is the only price that counts.
Car quotes exclude inland transport and every service before the car reaches our warehouse. They also exclude any GS 4510 inspection once it is reinstated, and Ghana duties and port charges. That means the quote covers the ocean and handling steps Guldstreet controls, while the customer arranges or pays separately for the steps before the warehouse and the charges at destination.
When you request a quote, have the vehicle or equipment details ready: year, make, model, VIN or serial number, running condition, dimensions, weight and whether it starts and moves under its own power. For containers, tell us the cargo type, approximate volume and whether you need FCL or LCL.
China to Ghana vehicle rates
Guldstreet publishes rates for China to Ghana vehicle shipments for fuel and hybrid (HEV) vehicles with valid export documentation. The rates are:
| Vehicle type | Rate (USD) |
|---|---|
| Large SUV or pickup truck | 3,500 |
| Compact SUV | 2,800 |
| Large sedan | 2,350 |
| Compact sedan | 1,700 |
Add 500 USD per vehicle if export documentation is not available. These rates apply to fuel and hybrid HEV vehicles only. If you are shipping from China, confirm the vehicle type and documentation status before you book so the quote is accurate.
Choosing the right loading method
The loading method affects cost, handling risk and how the cargo is secured. The right choice depends on the unit and the route.
RoRo
Roll-on roll-off suits cars, SUVs, pickup trucks and commercial trucks that can be driven or towed onto the vessel. It is often the simplest method for running vehicles. The unit is booked as a rolling unit and secured by the carrier.
Flat rack and open top
Flat rack and open top containers suit heavy equipment and machinery that does not fit a standard box or cannot be driven onto a RoRo deck. The cargo is loaded onto the platform or into the open-top box and secured for the voyage.
Breakbulk
Breakbulk suits oversized or unusually shaped equipment that needs to be lifted and stowed individually. It is used when the cargo does not fit a container or RoRo configuration.
FCL and LCL containers
FCL gives you the whole container, which is useful when you want your cargo to stay together and reduce handling. LCL lets you pay for the space you use, which suits smaller shipments that do not fill a container. Both are available for Ghana-bound cargo.
Documents you need before the cargo moves
Paperwork is where most delays start. The documents below should be ready before the cargo is loaded, not after.
- Vehicle title documents for U.S. CBP. U.S. Customs and Border Protection needs vehicle title documents at least 72 hours before export. If the title is not in order, the vehicle cannot move on schedule.
- Export documentation for China-origin vehicles. The China to Ghana rates assume valid export documentation. If it is not available, the rate increases by 500 USD per vehicle.
- Commercial invoice and packing list. These describe the cargo, its value and how it is packed. They are used for customs and for the carrier.
- Bill of lading instructions. Confirm the shipper, consignee and notify party details before the cargo sails.
- Ghana Shippers' Authority registration. Registration is required before ICUMS processing under Act 1122, enforced from August 2026. Confirm the current steps with the authority or a licensed customs house agent.
If any document is missing or inconsistent, fix it before the cargo reaches the port. Correcting paperwork after sailing is slower and more expensive.
Ghana import rules for vehicles and equipment
Ghana applies several rules to used vehicles and certain appliances. These rules change, so confirm the current position before you buy or ship.
- GS 4510 pre-shipment inspection and Certificate of Conformity. The pre-shipment inspection and Certificate of Conformity were due from October 1, 2026, but the Ghana Standards Authority suspended the inspection on October 5, 2026, with no new date announced. Do not treat the inspection as currently required. Confirm the status before you book.
- Used-vehicle age limit. Reports on the age limit conflict, with figures of 10 years and 15 years in circulation. Confirm the age limit before buying a vehicle for Ghana.
- Barred vehicles. Flood, fire, rebuilt and salvage vehicles are barred.
- Right-hand-drive vehicles. Right-hand-drive vehicles are admitted only under a regulated conversion framework that is still being set up.
- Banned appliances. Used fridges, freezers and air conditioners are banned.
- VAT. Ghana's 2026 VAT reform set a single effective VAT rate of 20% including NHIL and GETFund.
- PUBD. The PUBD is filed on arrival or within 48 hours.
For anything else regulatory, confirm with the agency or a licensed customs house agent. Rules can change between the time you buy and the time the cargo arrives.
Practical checklist before you book
- Confirm the vehicle or equipment is allowed into Ghana, including the age limit and the barred categories.
- Check the GS 4510 inspection status with the Ghana Standards Authority or your customs house agent, since the inspection was suspended on October 5, 2026.
- Gather the title, commercial invoice, packing list and any export documentation.
- Confirm U.S. CBP has the title documents at least 72 hours before export.
- Decide whether RoRo, flat rack, open top, breakbulk, FCL or LCL fits the cargo.
- Request a written quote for USA or Canada cargo, or confirm the China rate and documentation status.
- Register with the Ghana Shippers' Authority before ICUMS processing if you are the importer.
- Plan for Ghana duties and port charges, which are separate from the car quote.
- Confirm the PUBD filing on arrival or within 48 hours.
- Keep copies of every document with the vehicle and with your records.
What the quote covers and what it does not
For USA and Canada vehicle, equipment and container shipments, the quote is prepared per job in writing. Car quotes exclude inland transport and every service before the car reaches our warehouse, any GS 4510 inspection once it is reinstated, and Ghana duties and port charges. Ask for the written quote to list what is included so there is no confusion later.
For China to Ghana vehicle shipments, the published rates cover the vehicle types listed above for fuel and hybrid HEV vehicles with valid export documentation. Add 500 USD per vehicle if export documentation is not available.
Payment terms matter too. Every invoice shows a card or PayPal price and a 3% lower non-card price. Non-card methods are Zelle, Cash App, bank transfer, or cash to the driver at pickup for barrel and box shipments only. No cash for vehicles, heavy equipment, containers or commercial cargo. Card payments are welcome for those.
How Guldstreet handles the move
Guldstreet Shipping is a New York-based boutique global shipping company that ships everything from barrels and personal items to cars and trucks to West Africa. For vehicles, equipment and containers, the work starts with a written quote and a document check, then moves to booking and loading. The vessel and estimated arrival are confirmed when cargo sails.
For customers in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and the DC area, Guldstreet can coordinate pickup and the move to the port. The company also handles last mile delivery in Ghana, including collection from Tema, Takoradi, Kotoka cargo terminal or consolidator warehouses with door delivery anywhere in Ghana, including cargo shipped by other companies. Last mile delivery is quoted per delivery.
If you are shipping commodities between Ghana, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Togo, Burkina Faso and the USA for licensed exporters and importers, or bulk food staples and building materials into Ghana, those moves are quoted per shipment. Guldstreet does not handle gold, silver, diamonds or precious stones, crude oil, LNG or refined petroleum, or live animals.
Common mistakes that delay Ghana shipments
- Buying a vehicle before confirming the age limit, since reports conflict between 10 and 15 years.
- Assuming the GS 4510 inspection is required when it was suspended on October 5, 2026 with no new date.
- Missing the 72-hour U.S. CBP title requirement before export.
- Booking a China-origin vehicle without valid export documentation and then facing the 500 USD per vehicle addition.
- Forgetting that car quotes exclude inland transport, services before the warehouse, any GS 4510 inspection once reinstated, and Ghana duties and port charges.
- Filing the PUBD late instead of on arrival or within 48 hours.
- Skipping Ghana Shippers' Authority registration before ICUMS processing.
Each of these is avoidable with a document check before the cargo moves. The cost of fixing them after sailing is almost always higher than the cost of getting them right at the start.
Next steps
Start with the cargo details and the destination. For USA and Canada vehicle, equipment and container shipments, request a written quote per job. For China to Ghana vehicles, confirm the vehicle type and export documentation status. For everything else, confirm the current Ghana rules with the agency or a licensed customs house agent before you commit.
