What You Cannot Ship in a Barrel to Ghana
Every year, barrel shipments to Ghana are delayed, seized or returned because of prohibited items. Most of the time, the shipper didn't know the item was restricted.
US Export Restrictions
- Firearms and ammunition: Strictly prohibited without State Department export licenses
- Hazardous materials: Flammable liquids, compressed gases, aerosols, oversized batteries
- Controlled substances: Narcotics, prescription medications in large quantities
Ghana Customs Prohibited Imports
- Fresh food and produce: Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy are prohibited
- Soil or organic material: Prohibited due to pest and disease risk
- Counterfeit goods: Fake branded items are subject to seizure
- Pornographic material: Prohibited under Ghana law
- Currency: Undeclared amounts over $10,000 are seized
- Used mattresses and upholstered furniture: Restricted due to pest concerns
What Happens If Prohibited Items Are Found?
- The barrel is detained at Tema Port
- The recipient is notified and required to appear with documentation
- Prohibited items are confiscated and may be destroyed
- The barrel may be held for weeks pending inspection clearance
